PPC Volunteer Teeshirts

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

APD will furnish each volunteer with a match logo teeshirt. They would like everyone to wear the shirt while working as an easy way to spot the volunteers. RGPSC is looking into getting volunteers a white baseball cap with blue RGPSC lettering since you couldn’t wear our teeshirt while volunteeing.

Volunteer News for the 2006 Fall PPC Matches

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Regional and National PPC Matches in Albuquerque - Todd Parkins and Neal Terry of Albuquerque’s Police Department held a meeting today for folks wanting to volunteer at the fall PPC matches. I took some notes for anyone who may be interested. I apoligize that this is a longer news post than any of us would like, there is lots of information. Future blog entries should be much shorter.

Good News!
ABQ has the National PPC matches under contract for the next five years. And if all goes well, they’ll like us so much we get renewed contracts. So this is just the first of many.

Disclaimer: My memory tends to be faulty - any errors in the note-taking are mine. Also, things may change before the matches, so check this blog for later news posts. Neil Terry has an email list of people who have volunteered, and he will keep them up to date with the details.

General Information:
The matches will be run by NRA people who have lots of experience at previous national PPC matches. There will be police volunteers to coordinate the civilian volunteers. The match will be open to the public, but since there will be no immediate feedback on how well each shooter did, (target scoring will be done later in a separate area so that it doesn’t slow down the relays of shooters), it’s likely to be just family watching. There will be 37 gun companies exhibiting their wares, and Brownells will be exhibiting also.

APD Contacts:
Neal Terry is your main guy to answer questions from volunteers. If this news post doesn’t answer all your questions, email him at nterry@cabq.gov.

Match Dates:
9/28/2006 through 10/5/2006 (exact times TBD)

  • September 28, 2006 - practice day for the regional match. It will be run just like a regular match day, and volunteers are needed. It’s a good day to make sure you understand your duties.
  • September 29 and 30 is the Regional Match. That’s a Friday, and Saturday.
  • October 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 is the National Match. That’s a Sunday through Thursday.

Next Volunteer Meeting: Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. Only go if you haven’t been to a volunteer meeting yet. It’s at the Police classroom at the City Shooting Range Park. If you can recruit any new volunteers, ask them to go.

Volunteer positions:
The plan is to have enough volunteers to give each other rest breaks as needed.

  1. Scoring Pen: There will be no scoring of targets on the line. Easels holding five B27 targets at a time will be set up (at eye level) under a shade canopy. They need volunteers with shooting experience who can tell a 9mm hole from a 38, 357, .40, .45. , etc. and understand basic scoring concepts. NRA referees will be in the scoring pen to make any tough calls and deal with any contested calls.
  2. Target Detail: Volunteers will move targets from the storage area to the shooting line, and from the shooting line to the scoring pen.
  3. Pistol Line and Block Officers: These volunteers make sure the groups of five shooters are ready to move up to the line at the designated time. Watch for muzzle control and other safety rules. There is a hierarchy of control. Each group of five line officers will report to a block officer via hand signals. Each block officer will report to the Chief Range Officer, who signals the tower with green and red signal paddles. The tower talker gives commands via a PA system to the shooters. Anybody can yell out a cease fire for a safety issue.
  4. Shotgun Line and Block Officers: Same as above, except on the shotgun range.
  5. Parking Lot Safety: Volunteers will direct arriving shooters and spectators to open parking spaces and watch for gun safety in the parking lots. There will be metal signs indicating that there shall be no gun handling in the parking lots. Designated safety areas will be available for cleaning, maintenance, unbagging (removing) guns from gun bags, gun trays, or holsters. Don’t get in a hassle with any competitor over this, report it up to a police volunteer if necessary.
  6. Utility: Volunteers will handle last-minutes chores as they come up.

Please sign up with Neal Terry for only one of these choices.

Other Goodies: Volunteers are invited to a police barbeque dinner, and there will be an NRA banquet also. Dates and times are to be announced by Neal Terry later.
